Stuffed on the Moving Boxes

Our wedding and Easter aside, life has felt like one stressful thing after another the past month. How many times lately I have looked at Stuffed and wished to be a cat!

Greens and Blues

A long walk this afternoon in my favorite spot in the city.  I would love to live in a little cabin inside these woods.  Stuffed would race out the door in the mornings to chase the chubby bumblebees.
Mike and I would spend our days hiking and reading and cooking.
We would plant strawberries and feast on homemade bread and jelly.
And watch the ducks glide along on our pond.
I would delight in sun tea, toads, and so much free time.
The air would smell of creek beds, soil, and wildflowers.
Every meal would be a picnic.
We would awake to birds' songs in the morning and always be able to see the stars at night.

Table and Chairs and Other Gifts of Ordinary Days

My parents and I went to a flea market Saturday afternoon, and after two hours of looking around, just as I reached the place where the three of us were all to meet up and head back to the car, I saw this great green table and its four matching heavy oak chairs. At this point in the day, I had $5 in my pocket, so I knew there was no way I'd be buying it, and yet. . . .I wanted this set as soon as I saw it. Sometimes things just hit you a certain way, and this was one of those times. There was just something about the set--I could imagine Mike and I eating cinnamon rolls at this chipped green table on some on some future cold Christmas morning, I could see my parents sitting down with us for a simple summer garden meal on these four flowered chairs, I could see the table in a kitchen we don't even yet have with a terracotta pot of red Geraniums on its center. . . .I just wanted this, and $5 in my pocket or not, I couldn't imagine leaving it behind. I actually had tears in my eyes as I looked at the hand-painted flowers and examined each of the chairs.
I talked with the flea market booth vendor/owner about the set and told him I really wanted it and was just figuring out how to handle it. He said he'd go down on the price by $40, which made it even sweeter, and then he said something I don't remember about the price, and I had to laugh and tell him, "I'm not playing hardball with you! I have $5 on me right now! But I want this, and I'll figure it out. Let me find my parents and see what we can do." I found my dad first, and we went over to the booth to look at the set again. My dad could see why I was charmed by it. We left again to find my mom and returned with her. As my parents checked out the table and chairs together, the man told me I looked just like his granddaughter in Myrtle Beach--"You even have the same hair!"--and said if we could put a little down on it, he'd hold it for us that night and we could pick it up Sunday. I said, "Would you hold it for $5?!" expecting him to laugh, but he said, "I would. I know you really want it, so for you, I would."
I promised the man my dad and I would be back in the morning to pick it up. I found an ATM that evening to get the cash and could hardly believe I had gone to the flea market expecting to find maybe some fabric or the usual flea market who-knows-what and had instead ended up with furniture.
My dad and I made the trip back to the flea market the next morning, Dad wondering out loud if he'd be able to fit all the chairs into the back of the car or if he'd have to call one of my brothers to help. I had baked chocolate chip cookies the night before and had some wrapped up and tied with a red-wired bow to give to the flea market booth owner. It was supposed to be another rainy day, but the weather held until later that afternoon.
When we found the booth again, we saw that the man had already taken the table apart for us--it has two extra leaves--and had it all ready to go. He helped my dad load it all into the car, he thanked me for the cookies, and he shook my hand when I offered it and told me to enjoy the table and chairs. An incredibly nice man. I hope he's still in business when I finally have this all set up in some future new home, as I'd really love to send him a picture.
When we got home and unloaded it all from the car, I took these pictures, sent a few to Mike, and oohed and ahhed over the set some more. The green! The flowers! The carvings! The curvy shape! The black leather seats! The weight of each piece! The incredible deal I'd gotten on it! I was just so tickled.  When I got out of the shower later that night and said goodnight to my dad, who was still up watching TV, he said, "Good night" then gestured toward the TV and said, "They got that Bin Laden." Pajamas on and hair wrapped in a towel, I grabbed a blanket and curled up on the couch while Dad stayed in his chair, and we watched the news and then the President's address together, near-silent for the next hour or so. What was there to say? How many thousands of people did not get to enjoy a carefree flea market weekend in early May, or share another visit with their parents, or enjoy a cinnamon roll and flowers at a table with the one they married? And how many protect us every day so that we might be able to live the table-and-Geranium-filled lives we so love? I doubt I will ever sit in one of these chipped chairs to enjoy a meal or see a loved one pull up to the hand-painted table without uttering a thankful prayer.

Be glad of life because it gives you the chance to love, to work, to play, and to look up at the stars. ~ Henry Van Dyke

A bright

and beautiful
walk home from work this morning.
Now the tree branches are dipping and bowing as the next thunderstorm begins and I get ready to climb into bed.

Sweet Easter

After Mike saw what the Easter Spider had brought him, he tried to sleep some more while I got up and began a day of cooking and baking for the two of us. I love being with family on holidays but also love quiet holidays spent just with Mike. Yesterday, our first holiday together since getting married on the 15th, was especially sweet. It was just the laid-back day we both needed. Mike had bought cinnamon rolls for us. I took a long bath. Mike read the paper and some comic books. I stayed in my pajama pants all day. Mike made coffee. In between kitchen tasks, I enjoyed my usual iced tea while checking email. It was warm enough, especially with the oven on and water boiling on the stove, to have the windows open. We gave Stuffed extra treats. Quiet. Laid-back. Sweet.
Ah, yes, he's now bald! I am very firmly in the "Don't-tell-me-not-to-cut-my-hair-short-because-I-wouldn't-tell-you-what-to-do-with-your-hair" camp, and I tend to cut my own hair really short every so often much to the dismay of everyone around me, but I don't mind saying that I asked Mike not to shave his head and beard until after the wedding. That's still a compromise, though, I believe. I didn't tell him not to do it, after all, but instead just asked him to hold off. . . :)

Photos are funny in what they do and don't capture. Besides cropping out my dog-with-dog-bone pajama pants, that one of us doesn't let you see all the stacked moving boxes around us either. If all goes as planned, we are moving into a new apartment in July. Piles of taped and labeled cardboard cartons, I can handle. The bare walls in here are starting to get to me. We had originally been scheduled to move this Saturday, so I had packed a lot before there was a change of plan. Now, we are surrounded by packed boxes and white walls but are one step ahead for this summer's move. I was glad to get one more photo of us in here that doesn't show all that.

As I told Mike yesterday, this Easter was our last sit-at-the-table-for-a-nice-dinner holiday in this apartment. We don't cook a real meal for Memorial Day, and the 4th of July will find us curled up with picnic food to watch Jaws, as is tradition. I fell in love with those rainbow-colored plaid plates and matching cups at Target a few weeks ago and bought a set of each for us, and I knew I wanted to keep the table simple and uncluttered this year, so they and my bridal bouquet and our tiny wedding cake topper were color enough on a white tablecloth.
To clear all the boxes and stacks of books off the table yesterday took at least fifteen minutes, but it was worth it. We needed the peace and just plain goodness of a sweet and simple Easter dinner, and we got it.  I made gnocchi and meatballs, just like my grandparents used to, and salads and focaccia bread to go with it. We had our peanut butter nests and marshmallow "Peep"-topped cheesecake for dessert.  There was still leftover wedding cake in the fridge, but even I seem to be tiring of sweet frosting, so that will keep awhile longer. After we finished eating, we watched Black Swan, and I talked with my parents for a few minutes. A happy Easter and our first as a married couple, it was just a lovely day.

The Easter Spider

Every Easter morning, while Mike is momentarily busy with something, The Easter Spider visits. (Spider-Man-loving Mike would not, of course, be visited by a bunny.) This morning while Mike went outside to get the paper, the Easter Spider left behind Mike's traditional peanut butter candy-filled basket, and this time, treat of treats: It included a duck! How did he know that Mike wants a pond filled with ducks and can't yet have one? :)
Happy Easter to you all. ♥

Peanut Butter Bird Nests & A Nap Before Bedtime

Utterly wiped out by work today, I got home at 8 pm to find Mike waiting on the front porch for Chinese food to be delivered for our supper. We ate and caught up on our day and then found ourselves waking up from opposite sides of our tiny studio apartment: Mike had fallen asleep on the bed watching sports news after supper and I had fallen asleep in my chair while trying to read. "A nap before bedtime," he murmured a second ago in explanation and then fell back to sleep. I should be asleep too but stubbornly refuse to let my entire day be just work and sleep, so I will stay up a little longer to read. I'm glad I made the traditional peanut butter bird nests yesterday, as I certainly don't have it in me tonight.

Peanut Butter Bird Nests:

~ 7 oz. marshmallow fluff
~ 1/2 cup peanut butter
~ 3 TBSP. butter
~ pretzel sticks (or chow mein noodles or potato sticks)
~ peanut M&Ms (The Robin egg-blue Easter M&Ms are my favorite color, so I always go with them.) :)

~ Combine the first three ingredients in a saucepan over low heat.
~ Add the pretzel sticks, coating them well.
~ On wax paper, form the mixture into nests and arrange the M&M "eggs."

Wedding Cake, Cookies, & Flowers :)

After we went out to supper last Friday night, we stopped at a Wal-Mart near our hotel to pick up cake and ice cream. Since we'll be having some kind of celebration with our families sometime in the future, this cake was just was for us, and while I wasn't picky about it, I still hoped to run into the store and find something special, and as with the rest of our wedding weekend, our luck held: The store had a simple white square cake with a spring green border that exactly matched the green of my dress. :) The cake originally had hot pink and purple flowers iced onto the corners, but I knew I could fix it up easily enough, so into my basket it went. As I paid for the cake and ice cream, the cashier commented on my hair--it was still in its braid--and the cake, and I had to explain that I'd gotten married that day and would be using this as my wedding cake. She congratulated me and laughed--"Wal-Mart is the LAST place I'd be on MY wedding day!"--and then looked puzzled when she rang up the colored pencils, silk Daffodil bunch, and small black picture frame. I let her wonder about those items, and while waiting for Mike, an elderly man spotted me standing there with my cake and kindly said, "Someone having a birthday?" I explained that it was actually for a wedding, and he nodded and said, "Ahh! Those are good too!" Mike and I thought that was one of the more memorable comments from Friday, and it was just a sweet moment.
It was exactly the cake I'd wanted. I used to be really into cake decorating, but even had I spent a lot of time and effort on our wedding cake, I wouldn't have done it any other way. Like the rest of the weekend, it was simple and and sweet and lovely and just "us." And the little framed drawing is now up on a shelf here in our apartment, and I'm sure we'll use it on all our anniversary cakes too.
The day before the wedding, I spent some timing sewing my pocket of pictures of loved ones into my dress and attaching Sommer's ring and something else in honor of someone else to the jacket, and when those projects were done, I began baking and decorating heart-shaped cookies to share with the court house staff and hotel staff. And I saved a few for me and Mike, of course.  :)
I made the bouquet of silk flowers so I could keep it. It is all-yellow Daffodils (my favorite flower), Pussy Willows, and a few Cattails, with the handle/holder wrapped in green gingham ribbon.
Just looking at it makes me happy. I finished making it in late March but didn't want Mike to see it until the wedding--not that he himself would have remotely cared :)--so although I wanted to keep it out where I could see it every day, I didn't have the chance until after the wedding. And today I have been married a week already and the leftover cake, the tiny framed drawing, and the bouquet will soon be on our Easter dinner table.  ♥
