Winter drags on with more storms called for this week, but it finds me having received both doses of the vaccine and having visited family twice, so my gratitude outweighs my eagerness for spring. We are all getting each other through it--did you see the sweet love note Monique's grandchildren left her and her husband in the snow?! ♥--and while a number of people in the family have been sick from Covid (my nephew, three aunts, one uncle, and three cousins, at last count) this past year, we are still here as we look forward to the next season together, so how can we complain, really. May spring come soon, though, if I may say so, and may it bring healing for us all.

The Third Day of the Year
'A tranquil but determined start to the new year here. I had a good bit of time off from work these past few weeks, and I used a lot of it to get some things organized and reorganized in this little apartment. I have long thought of home-care and decorating and what I call puttering around--fluffing up the throw pillows, changing out the tablecloth, adding the fresh flowers to canning jars, hanging the new-old paintings and embroidered pieces sooner rather than later, refolding the granny square afghans on the backs of the chairs, taking oranges out of their mesh bag and adding them to the green stoneware bowl, even just putting the dishes back where they belong and arranging them neatly on their shelves--as hobbies or pastimes or interests, but I have realized this past month that for me, these little activities are actually a form of self-care. Eureka! When we see a woman who has made the extra effort to dress especially nicely, paint her nails, look out for her health and fitness, or [insert-your-own-examples], we think "There is someone who values herself and makes the time to take good care of herself," and I realize now that similarly, when my home is orderly and sweet and cheerful, I feel those things about myself. When my home is orderly and sweet and cheerful, I feel those things about myself. Ahhhh! All the little "puttering around" tasks, then, aren't really chores at all, then, just as I would no longer think of them as one of my hobbies either. I see now that they're more vital for me than that. These are ways I take care of myself, I have just learned at 40-and-a-half-years-old: I go for long walks, I take my vitamins, I try to eat and drink well, I use sunscreen year-round, I pray, I read, I cuddle with Stuffed, I show my love to my loves ones, I slather on lotion, I rest when needed, and I keep an organized and inviting home.
On that front, I have tackled the bathroom cupboard--and after almost seven years of living here, have wrestled it into submission. It is about seven feet tall and its three shelves are two feet deep but only twelve inches wide. Without the shelves, it would be the perfectly-proportioned space to store a broom and mop, but . . .I think I've finally figured it out. And now hanging vertically on the inside of its door are three narrow cork bulletin boards, my work-schedule, a list of that month's birthdays and other need-to-send-a-card-or-otherwise-mark-a-special-day occasions, a small pink dry-erase board I'm using as my weekly food diary, a basket for pens and dry-erase markers, Stuffed's litter-scoop, a dust pan and broom, and a six-inch-wide calendar I use to record my daily walks. 'A good use now, and better late than never, of that seven-foot tall-but-only-twelve-inch-wide door too. Take that, Ill-Proportioned Closet. That alone has made home and life feel so much tidier. It's What-I-Need-to-Remember Central, and it's a breath of fresh air for this lifelong list-maker: I have it all in one spot now but tucked away on the back of the door so it doesn't "read" as clutter. That's been just one improvement lately. And now that I actually like the cupboard, I want to doll it up even more by papering the small wall-spaces inside the cupboard. . .give it a little more love. Just like that, it's become a time-saver, a better use of space, and features a door I actually enjoy opening and seeing what's behind. I myself feel so much more on top of things even with this one project, is the point. And now that I have a better perspective on it all, I look forward to taking on everything else that's on my around-the-apartment to-do list. Those to-do items no longer feel like problems or chores ahead of me, but instead opportunities and possibilities. How good this all feels after watching everything fall apart around here the first seven months with this new job and new work schedule! Ohhhhh, I love learning. I love figuring it out. Life already feels so much better, and 2018 is looking so much brighter. ♥

Sunday's Walk
'Getting back into my eight-miles-a-day after a few months of shorter walks. This evening's weather was perfect for a couple hours outside, with soft light and just enough of a breeze. Love, love, love. ♥ It is past time to replace these shoes, though, and finding new ones will be one of the next couple weeks' projects. They have seen me through so many gorgeous walks.
Ah, this glorious golden hour when even my 5'2" self looks lanky and leggy!
Temperatures are only supposed to reach the sixties the next few days, which will make the next few walks at least as pleasant. Here's to springtime, good light, and good health.

~Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.~ Roald Dahl
It is a sunny 45° in late afternoon now, warm enough to enjoy open windows awhile, and with them this stunning view of the brick wall across the way. :) (My dream of apartment-rooftop baseball game-watching lives on!) It is buoying to discover today--today of all days--that a bold and shining star exists inside each of these seemingly-simple Tulips, there all along for anyone who would just look for it.

Inside and Outside
I have been deliberately and most-obviously cutting back on the time I spend online--you all are in my thoughts and prayers even if I'm not in your comment boxes and email inboxes lately ♥--and recalibrating how I spend my days so that there is a better balance of fresh air and miles walked and quiet time (reading, napping, writing, puttering around the apartment, etc.) and social time. Both my personality and my paid work always find me somehow taking care of others, and I am feeling healthier and more content now that I've made taking care of myself more of a priority this spring. Laundry-doing, email-and-comment-sending, and letter-writing have temporarily fallen by the wayside as I get into new routines and better habits in other areas. As I've said before, this self-nurturing bit seems to be one of my most-revisited life lessons, and although it's now taken me almost my entire first forty years to figure it out, at least I'm figuring it out. :) I had the sweetest dream a few weeks ago that I decided to drive down to my grandparents' house for a surprise visit. Grandma and I greeted and hugged each other so joyfully, it still makes me smile. "Oh! I should do this more often!" I squealed when I realized how happy this impromptu visit was making us. "I should have been doing this all along!" While she and I were catching up with each other in the kitchen, I looked out the window and saw Papa building a giant bee box in their side yard. (He was a beekeeper [in real life].) That was really all there was to the dream, but the feeling of it and my gratitude for it have remained with me almost a month later, both because it was a rare happy dream of my grandparents and because it gave me a taste of the peace and nurturing I've been cultivating here, one steamy mile and one steamy bowl of oatmeal at a time.

36
I turn thirty-six years old today. I am the rare soul who loves to grow older. I've loved my thirties and can't wait to be forty and have been saying since I was a kid, "Can you imagine being eighty or ninety someday!? Knowing everything you'll know by that point and having learned that much and experienced that much and finally being able to see how so many of the pieces and story-lines of your life all fit together?! Wow!" Wow, indeed. My older brother will be forty in February and has long been lamenting his "advanced" age, but I myself love it.
We all had a sweet visit over the weekend. My mom loved her paper dolls, yes. As predicted, right after the "Oh my gosh!" and "Vally, how did you FIND this?!" came "There's IDA! Oh, I remember her! I always remembered there was an Ida with dark hair pulled up on top!" :) My younger brother and his wife announced that they're expecting their first baby in November. Aunt Laurie and I sat at the dining room table with mugs of hot chocolate Sunday night and looked through a stack of old Country Living magazines that Mom had found at the flea market the day before. Mom made my traditional birthday cheesecake (made with lemon gelatin) and wrapped my gifts in a pink polka dot paper. (My brothers groan and make fun of me because I take so long to unwrap presents, but I admire the gift wraps and bows and cards so much and always save a scrap of each wrapping paper from birthdays and Christmas. They thought and hoped I could open my gifts during the twenty-minute intermission during the hockey game they were watching Sunday, but alas, no, so they turned on the radio to listen to the next period while I finished. ["Brothers." :)]) My older brother gave me my traditional birthday bag of rhubarb from his garden. My uncle showed me his new camera. My cousin Mark and I caught up and watched a couple shows on the Food network. My dad and I laughed at the fact that Mom is all excited about the "new" shade of blue she and Dad have been repainting the house this past week even though it's looked to the rest of us like the exact same blue since 1978. My nephew regaled us with sports trivia, and my niece's ever-growing refrigerator collection of grinning cat drawings--each one labeled "HELLO KITTY!"--still has me and Mike giggling.
I'm not 100% yet but am feeling much better. Thank you. ♥ I hadn't been sick since around New Year's, so that was a great good-health streak for me. And I have a few more days to rest before returning to work, so this should be a restorative week.
Last year's rainbow birthday cake took forever to make, although it was so fun and cheerful, it was worth it to me, but I needed rest more than rainbows this time around, so tonight's dessert for me and Mike was two slices of carrot cake from a local coffee shop.
And especially since I never found pink Tulips for Easter or my beloved Daffodils at all this spring, I treated myself to a small bouquet of orange Tulips this afternoon. It rained here almost all day, so orange was the way to go today. Here's to another year of trying to shine brighter and to be better and wiser and kinder, both to self and others. Here's to thirty-six. ♥
